TLC Onsite Practicum Workshop Descriptions
Level 1: Basics of Brain Training (8 hours $195)
Gain a clear understanding of brain training’s technical basis: Sources of EEG, frequency and amplitude, monopolar and bipolar montages, one and two-channel protocols, common-mode rejection, artifact and more. Practice hands-on the first 3 required skills of the brain trainer:
1. Finding sites quickly and accurately in the 10/20 system;
2. Preparing, applying, removing and cleaning leads quickly and effectively;
3. Evaluating signal quality; identifying and minimizing key sources of artifact.
Level 2: Assessment and Training (16 hours $375)
Prerequisite: Level 1 or permission of instructor. Learn the TLC Assessment system for assessing brain activation patterns and their correlations with mood, performance and behavior, in order to guide protocol selection for a wide range of objectives. Complete subjective and objective assessments as client and as trainer and produce your own training plan. Focus on skill 4:
4. Assess the client's symptoms, goals and brain activation patterns and use them to create a training plan. Educate client and support system on brain activation patterns, behavior and the brain training process.
Level 3: Managing the Training Process (16 hours $375)
Prerequisite: Level 2 or permission of instructor. Explore outcome-based coaching, session design, protocol selection and adjunctive training materials. Discuss strategies for difficult client and support group situations. Learn how to guide choices, when to change protocols, and when to end training. Hands-on training sessions with a variety of hardware/software platforms are included. Focuses on tasks 5-7:
5. Motivating client and support system, intervening in support system to support training changes;
6. Keeping records, evaluating and reporting changes;
7. Determining when to change protocols and terminate training.
Package Prices for Levels 1-3
For those who wish to combine Levels 1-3 workshops, there are package prices:
3 days: $550 4 days: $725 5 days: $900
Getting the Most from BioExplorer (16 hours $375)
This workshop is an intensely hands-on orientation to BioExplorer, a software package that permits users to use the same program with a variety of hardware platforms, provides exceptional feedback options and a broad range of protocol options. Participants will learn to:
a. Install and set up the program, add training devices and access its file structure;
b. Use prepared designs to operate a training session, including changing parameters;
c. Review and evaluate training results using BioReview software with prepared designs;
d. Create new training protocols and new reports from scratch.
Trainer's Practicum: Assessment (24 hours $550)
Prerequisite: Level 2 and familiarity with TLC Assessment. Each participant MUST bring a current assessment for him/herself and may also bring assessments from clients. Participants will develop and share training plans for multiple assessments as a model for use with clients. Hands-on experience is the major focus of this workshop, but we will NOT perform assessments in the workshop:
a. Evaluating multiple assessments and developing multiple training plans to build confidence;
b. Performing training sessions with a variety of training options;
c. Developing protocols and training environments in your native system;
d. A detailed training plan for each participant.
Using HEG (8 hours $195)
This 1-day workshop covers the use of hemo-encephalography (HEG), a newer form of brain training, which focuses on changing blood supply and/or blood oxygenation, primarily in the pre-frontal cortex. The workshop will discuss the rationale for using HEG, research findings from studies that have been done in the field, contra-indications, potential risks the trainer will wish to avoid and potential benefits. The two systems (pIR and nIR) will be discussed in terms of what is known about their differential strengths. We will cover how to run an HEG training session and how to change the training over time (in each system), sources for training protocols and hardware options (with an eye toward their costs). The training will include opportunities for participants to experience HEG training with both systems (trainees who have the hardware should bring it).
