Brain Training at Home

Brain training is the most powerful self-regulation technology since meditation. It gives you the tools to change attention, control, mood, learning, memory, physical states, performance, even ability to connect with the creative and spiritual in lasting ways, regardless of age. And it can do all this at home or work, on your own schedule, with a minimum investment, without pain, pills or side effects and in ways that are actually enjoyable!

Sounds too good to be true, but tens of thousands of individuals and families can attest that it is not. The issues you are dealing with may be called ADD, ADHD, Asperger’s, anxiety, bi-polar, migraine, stroke recovery, depression. TLC does not rely greatly on labels, but we know people all over the world who are successfully dealing with the issues underlying such labels through neurofeedback.

However, because brain training deals with technology and computers, and even more importantly because it deals with individual brains, there is a learning curve involved in achieving success. TLC began providing and tracking the success of home-based training in a large way in 1997, and we’ve been refining that model since then.

With this website, we are making a commitment to providing access to the five major resources we have found necessary to successful, economical home training. To contact us about any of the resources described here, use our Home Trainer’s Info Request Form .

1. Peer Support

Home-based brain training can be lonely and even frustrating at times (it is for pros—why not for you too?!) In our work with the remarkable group that developed around a few committed parents in Northern Virginia, TLC once again learned from the people with whom we worked. Take a look at what they are doing and find out how to link up with other Home Trainers.

2. Equipment

There are at least a dozen hardware and software systems for providing brain training, ranging in cost from about $1,000 to nearly $10,000. As with cars or computers, the most expensive are not always the best. As you know from browsing our equipment section, TLC serves as a distributor for several economical cutting-edge options—but we don’t work for any one of them. We can review your options (the ones we sell and the ones we don’t) quickly and easily and in clear language.

3. Guidance

You may wish to work with a professional to develop a training plan that is likely to result in successful outcomes and to help with decisions about changing course. Unfortunately, though, not all professionals are able or willing to provide this kind of support. We offer you three resources:

First, the instructions to our free Assessment tool guide you in gathering the brain data for the Assessment. Our Assessment Service will analyze this data for you and develop the most likely training strategies.

Second, the many workshops we have held over the years, TLC has developed a network of professionals around the US and the world. We can often put you in touch with professionals in your area who are supportive of home training, familiar with the TLC assessment system, and knowledgeable about the equipment you want to use. We can also do an individualized assessment and training plan ourselves when we are in your area. (Consult the Workshop Schedule.)

Third, when you join the braintrainer list-serve you will have access to the knowledge and advice of experienced home trainers and compatible professionals. This is an active list with well over 800 members. Membership is free.

4. Training

Whether or not you work with a professional, you will need to learn the basics of brain training. You need to be able to find sites on the head accurately, place sensors correctly and recognize that you are getting a good signal to train. You may want to learn how to evaluate and determine training plans, how to coach effectively and what you can do to add to the effectiveness of your brain training.

Home Trainers are welcome at all TLC workshops for which you have the prerequisites. If you belong to a group that wants to learn brain training, your group can also host TLC workshops and request that we orient them specifically to the needs and situations of hometrainers.

5. Family Systems

Making brain training work in your situation is much easier if you set it up properly. TLC can help you determine up-front whether your family system has what it takes to support successful outcomes. To read a report on a home training project that worked click here.

Based on what you told us about T3/T4 training, I changed my son's protocol slightly . . . It worked! He calmed down quite a bit during the training. And when I looked at the graph, he had gotten his lobeta higher than ever before and his high beta lower! A success already!"                     Home Trainer
